Why is neutral wire connected to ground?

Image
In an electrical circuit, there is an element known as the neutral wire, and this is usually grounded in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. A significant question that often arises in the electrical field is: Why is the neutral wire connected to ground? What purpose does this serve and how does it benefit the functioning of the electrical circuit? The answer is found within the realm of electrical safety and effective operation of electrical appliances and devices.  In order to fully understand the reasoning, it is essential to have a basic understanding of an electrical circuit's configuration. A typical electrical system uses alternating current (AC) which has three wires: phase, neutral, and ground. The phase wire (often referred to as the hot wire) carries the voltage, and the neutral wire completes the electrical circuit, allowing current to return to the source. The ground wire is an extra layer of protection intended to redirect excess electricity...
